Mihhail Gerts Print

Mihhail Gerts is currently staff conductor at the Estonian National Opera in Tallinn. From 2005 till 2007 he was assistant chief conductor of the Grammy awarded Estonian National Male Choir RAM. He prepared productions for the Frankfurt Radio Symphony with Paavo Järvi (Sibelius, Kullervo), the Bochum Symphony with Steven Sloane (Shostakovitch, Symphony „Babi Yar“), the Tampere Philharmonic with John Storgårds (Sibelius, Kullervo), the Bergen Philharmonic and Andrew Litton as part of the International Bergen Festival (Schönberg, Gurrelieder), and for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Jac van Steen (Stravinsky, Oedipus Rex).

In the field of opera Mihhail Gerts has conducted a.o. „La Cenerentola“, „Rigoletto“, „Norma”, Mari Vihmands „The Formula of Love“, „Un Ballo in Maschera", „La Wally“ and „Swanflight“, the musicals „My Fair Lady“, „Cabaret“, „Grease“, „Rent“, „Man of La Mancha“ and „Les Miserables“ as well as the ballets  „Don Quijote“, „Nutcracker” and „The Three Musketeers”.

Concert engagements have seen Mihhail Gerts a.o. with the MDR Symphony Orchestra (Leipzig Radio), WDR Radio Orchestra Cologne, the New Lausitz Philharmonic, the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, and the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra

Born in 1984, Mihhail Gerts belongs to the leading Estonian conductors of his generation. He studied at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, piano with Ivari Ilja and conducting with Paul Mägi. During his studies, Mihhail Gerts was conductor of the academy’s symphony orchestra and of the Tallinn 21 Chamber Choir, which won a golden diploma and second prize in the Musica Mundi Choir Competition, Budapest 2003. Mihhail Gerts was awarded a special prize for the most outstanding young conductor of the competition.

Further, Mihhail Gerts is laureate of the conductor’s competition of Estonian Youth Choirs, where he received also the prize of the Estonian National Male Choir RAM as best participant of the competition, and in 2006 he was awarded the prize „debut of the year“ of the Estonian Cultural Foundation.

In 2005 Mihhail participated in Neeme Järvi’s Summer Academy, where he worked directly with world-renown conductors Neeme and Paavo Järvi, and Jorma Panula. In addition he attended masterclasses of  Gennadi Roshdestvenski, Eri Klas and Ronald Zollman.
